Sustainable and Green Floristry

At Bonny Lass Flowers, we care about more than just making beautiful arrangements – we want to do it in a way that respects the environment around us. Our green floristry approach means every decision is guided by nature-friendly practices, from selecting sustainable materials to reducing waste wherever possible.

Sustainability guides many of the choices we make, from sourcing local flowers to avoiding unnecessary plastics in our studio. This page explains how we work with nature in mind and the steps we take to keep our green floristry as environmentally friendly as possible.

Seasonal and sustainably sourced bouquets

Whenever the seasons allow, we offer British-grown flowers - especially throughout spring and summer when they’re at their best. This farm-to-vase approach supports local growers, reduces travel miles, and ensures we work with blooms at their freshest. For Christmas wreaths, our foliage is also sourced locally, keeping things close to home.

Why sustainability matters to us

Caring for the environment is a big part of how and why we do what we do. Flowers are a natural product, and it feels only right to treat the planet with the same care we give to our work.

That means making thoughtful choices behind the scenes – from how we source materials to how we deal with waste. All unused materials are composted where possible, avoiding single-use plastics, and recycling everything we can. Orders are packed in recycled cardboard boxes with recycled liners, both of which can go in your household recycling. This is the heart of our green floristry ethos.

A sustainability-first approach to floristry

We try to keep things simple, thoughtful, and low impact. That means making practical choices behind the scenes to reduce waste, avoid unnecessary materials, and use more sustainable options wherever we can. Here’s how we do it:

  • Materials and waste

We create natural tributes that are wholly suitable for woodland and green burials where use the of wires, floral foam and plastics isn’t allowed. Our natural tributes are made on willow, with moss and secured with twine. These are carefully crafted by our florists to ensure there’s no hidden chemicals or products.

  • Packaging

Our products are 100% degradable or compostable arrangements that possess all the beauty and emotional impact associated with funeral displays. Flowers can have a spiritual significance and people often have favourites. Flowers can beautifully evoke the season or a specific memory, perhaps flowers used for a wedding bouquet. They are a testimony to the fragility of life and can make a difficult day more beautiful.

Wedding florist in Newcastle Upon Tyne

Sustainable approach to wedding florsitry

Wedding florals are foam free using sustainable mechanics such as chicken wire, moss and reusable vessels and containers.

Below are some examples of how the base to our wedding bouquets are crafted.

Growing our sustainability approach

Sustainability is something we’re always working on - an ongoing process rather than a fixed goal. We know there’s no perfect way to do things, but we aim to make thoughtful choices every step of the way.

As new ideas, materials, and better practices emerge, we stay open to learning and evolving. Our green floristry isn’t just about the flowers - it’s about creating beauty that also cares for the people and the planet.
